Problem and Solution in a Folktale About a Dry Village

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Problem and Solution in a Folktale About a Dry Village" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and problem and solution never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this problem and solution worksheet?

⌄

Ask your child what went wrong before they fill in the chart, then what was tried first. Talk about other fixes before the last question. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Find the problem and solution in an original folktale about a village without water and a hidden spring. In a story, the problem is what goes wrong. The solution is how the characters fix it. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Write a few words in each row of the chart. Then, circle the letter of the best answer. Then, write your own idea on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this problem and solution worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with problem and solution. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an attempt in a story?

⌄

An attempt is a try that does not fix the problem. In the kite story, the first ideas fail before the characters find the solution. Charting the attempts shows how the events build to the ending.

How is problem and solution different in a nonfiction text?

⌄

A nonfiction text often names one problem and several solutions, like the town that adds a crossing guard and a signal at a busy crosswalk. Children chart each solution and decide which one worked best.

What if my child writes a different fix?

⌄

That is the goal of the last question. Any idea that would really solve the problem counts, and the answer key gives a sample.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All eight problem and solution sheets have an answer key.

How many 3rd Grade problem and solution worksheets are there?

⌄

8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are problem and solution worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these problem and solution worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
