Use a Map in a Nonfiction Passage About Yellowstone

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Use a Map in a Nonfiction Passage About Yellowstone" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RI.3.7. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on paragraphs & passages, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and nonfiction passages never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this nonfiction passages worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage together first, then let your child find each answer by its paragraph number. For the chart and map sheets, ask what the picture shows that the words do not. Check with the answer key, which lists other answers to accept.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how Old Faithful erupts about every 90 minutes, then follow a Yellowstone road trip map. Nonfiction tells what is real. A map is a drawing that shows where places are. The directions on the page read: Read the passage and the map. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the passage and the map on page 1. Circle the best answers to 1 to 4. Then, write your answers to 5 and 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this nonfiction passages worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade paragraphs & passages, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with nonfiction passages. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a nonfiction passage?

⌄

A nonfiction passage, also called informational text, gives true facts about a real topic, such as how puffins nest or how a submarine dives. On this page there are 64 of them for 3rd grade, each with an answer key.

What is the main idea of a nonfiction passage?

⌄

The main idea is what the whole passage is mostly about. The details are the facts that support it. A quick check: if a sentence could be covered up and the passage would still make sense, it is probably a detail rather than the main idea. Ten sheets have children fill in a main idea web with three key details.

Which reading skills do these passages practice?

⌄

Main idea and key details (RI.3.2), asking and answering questions (RI.3.1), the order of steps in a process (RI.3.3 and RI.3.8), word meanings from context clues (RI.3.4), an author's point of view (RI.3.6) and maps, tables, bar graphs and timelines (RI.3.7). Each new sheet names its skill in the header.

Are the opinion articles written by real people?

⌄

No. The five opinion articles, on weekend homework, school uniforms, class pets, field trips and walking to school, have made-up writers, and each page says the article is made up. The facts in them are real, so children can still tell an opinion from a fact.

What is a reading passage worksheet?

⌄

It is a sheet with a whole text to read, followed by questions that send the reader back into the text for the answers. This 3rd grade page has 101 sheets, including 64 nonfiction passages and 20 fiction passages, each passage with an answer key.

What is on each 3rd grade passage sheet?

⌄

Most sheets have the passage on page one and the questions on page two. The newer nonfiction sheets each practice one skill: a main idea web, who, what and why questions with paragraph numbers, numbering steps in order, reading a map, table, bar graph or timeline, listing an author's reasons, or matching six bold words to their meanings with context clues. The older nonfiction and fiction passages mix multiple choice questions with short written answers.

Are the nonfiction and fiction sheets different?

⌄

Yes. The 64 nonfiction passages give true facts about a real topic, such as owls, the Liberty Bell or how cheese is made, and ask for the main idea, text evidence, sequence, visual information, point of view and word meanings. The 20 fiction passages tell a short story and ask for the theme and how a character feels. The opinion articles use made-up writers, and each one says so on the page, but the facts in them are real.

Do these passage worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. Each of the 84 nonfiction and fiction passage sheets comes with an answer key that shows the correct choices, sample answers for the written questions and other answers to accept.
