How an Iceberg Breaks Off and Floats, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How an Iceberg Breaks Off and Floats, Read and Answer" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-ESS2-3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and water, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and bodies of water never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this bodies of water worksheet?

⌄

Find a river near you on a map and trace where it flows. Freeze a cup of water and float the ice in a bowl to show that ice floats. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how icebergs break off a glacier and float with most of their ice underwater, then answer questions. A liquid is something that can flow, like water. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this bodies of water worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade Earth and water, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with bodies of water. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the kinds of bodies of water?

⌄

A lake is a large body of still water with land all around it. A river is a long, narrow body of moving water that flows downhill. A pond is small and still, and the ocean is huge and salty. Most lakes and rivers hold fresh water.

Where does a river start and end?

⌄

Many rivers start high in hills or mountains, from rain, melting snow or water bubbling up from the ground. Small streams join to make the river bigger, and most rivers end at a lake or the ocean. The place where a river ends is its mouth, where mud can pile up into a delta.

Can water on Earth be solid or liquid?

⌄

Yes. Glaciers, icebergs, icicles and snow on a mountaintop are solid water, and rivers, rain, puddles and the ocean are liquid. Ice is not as heavy as water, so it floats, which is why a pond freezes only on top (2-ESS2-3).

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 7 bodies of water sheets have an answer key.
