Landforms and Bodies of Water, Read and Sort

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Landforms and Bodies of Water, Read and Sort" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-ESS2-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and water, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and landforms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this landforms worksheet?

⌄

Build a hill, a valley and an island from sand or play dough before the landform pages. Look at a map together and find one landform and one body of water. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Sort a hill, a valley and a plain as landforms and a lake, a pond and an ocean as bodies of water. A landform is a shape of land. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page, sort the cards and answer the questions. On page 2: Write each card from the Card Bank on a line in the column where it belongs, lines 1 to 6. Then, write the answers to questions 7 and 8 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this landforms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade Earth and water, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with landforms. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What landforms do second graders learn?

⌄

Hills, valleys, plains, mountains, canyons, islands, peninsulas and sand dunes. A hill is high, rounded land, a valley is low land between hills, and a plain is wide, flat land where farms often sit.

What is the difference between an island and a peninsula?

⌄

An island has water on all sides, so you need a boat, a plane or a bridge to reach most islands, like the islands of Hawaii. A peninsula has water on three sides and joins bigger land on the fourth, so you can walk or drive onto it. Most of Florida is a peninsula.

How do landforms change?

⌄

Moving water, wind and volcanoes shape land. A river carved the Grand Canyon a little at a time over millions of years, wind piles sand into dunes that slowly move, and lava from many eruptions can pile up into a new island (2-ESS1-1).

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 9 landform sheets have an answer key.
