Why do first graders mix up am, is, are, and I versus me so often?

These words are chosen by grammatical role rather than meaning, which is a more abstract rule than most first grade vocabulary. Am, is, and are all mean roughly the same thing but change based on the subject of the sentence (I am, she is, they are), and I versus me depends on whether the word is doing the action or receiving it. Repeated, low-stakes practice choosing the correct word in context is the most reliable way to build the automatic sense of which one sounds right, well before students can explain the grammar rule behind it.

How much does confusing homophones affect first grade writing?

It is one of the most common error types in early writing, showing up constantly in words like to/too/two and their/there/they're in later grades. Catching it early with dedicated homophone practice, rather than only correcting it inside longer writing pieces, gives students a clear, low-pressure way to build the habit of pausing on these specific words before both reading and writing them.
