The three that show up constantly in first grade reading are -s (adds plural or present tense, like cats or walks), -ed (marks past tense, like walked), and -ing (marks an ongoing action, like walking). These three cover the majority of verb and noun changes a first grader encounters, which is why they are the focus before moving on to less frequent suffixes in later grades.

How do I help my child recognize compound words?

Start by pointing out compound words in everyday reading (backpack, playground, sunshine) and asking your child to spot the two smaller words hiding inside. Once they can identify the parts, practice going the other direction: given two words, can they combine them into a compound word, and does the combination make sense?
