Time words

Talk the day through out loud before you start. What did we do this morning? What happens tomorrow? Children usually use these words correctly in speech months before they can read them, so you are attaching a word to something they already own. Expect yesterday and tomorrow to swap places for a while. That is normal at five, and it sorts itself out with use rather than correction.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow, morning, night, day. Time words are among the hardest in the kindergarten vocabulary, because there is nothing to point at. Yesterday cannot be drawn the way a duck can. So this page anchors each word to a familiar routine instead: breakfast for morning, bedtime for night, and a simple three step sequence for yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
