Replace the Bold Word With a Synonym
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Replace the Bold Word With a Synonym" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on synonyms and antonyms, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and synonyms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade vocabulary worksheet: write a Word Bank synonym for the bold word in 8 sentences, like chilly for cold and huge for giant. Answer key included. Part of our synonyms collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Read the Word Bank aloud first and have your child say each sentence again with the new word to hear that it still makes sense. On the matching pages, cross off each word once it has a partner. Check with the answer key.

FAQ
How do I use this synonyms worksheet?
⌄
Read the Word Bank aloud first and have your child say each sentence again with the new word to hear that it still makes sense. On the matching pages, cross off each word once it has a partner. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Write a Word Bank synonym for the bold word in 8 sentences, like chilly for cold and huge for giant. A synonym is a word that means the same or almost the same as another word, like stone and rock. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Find a synonym for the bold word in the Word Bank. Then, write it on the line. Use each word once. An answer key is included.
Can I use this synonyms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade synonyms and antonyms, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with synonyms. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a synonym?
⌄
A word that means nearly the same as another, like happy and glad. Synonyms usually take a bit more thought than antonyms, since "nearly the same" is a fuzzier idea than a clean opposite.
What does this worksheet ask my child to do?
⌄
Replace the Bold Word With a Synonym. Writing the answer is the hardest version, because nothing is provided to choose from. Your child has to retrieve the word from memory and spell it, so expect this one to take longer.
How do I build this vocabulary away from the page?
⌄
Bring it into everyday talk. At dinner or in the car, say a word and ask for a synonym or an antonym on the spot. Vocabulary sticks best when it's tied to a real moment, not just a worksheet.
What if my child thinks of a synonym that is not in the Word Bank?
⌄
Praise it, then ask which bank word means the same, since each bank word fits one sentence. On the matching pages every word on the left has one partner on the right, so a leftover word is a clue that a line went to the wrong place.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 5 synonyms sheets have an answer key. Where your child writes a sentence or an opinion, the key shows a sample answer.
