Plan a Scene That Mixes Inner and Outer Dialogue
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Plan a Scene That Mixes Inner and Outer Dialogue" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core W.5.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on narrative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and inner and outer dialogue never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this inner and outer dialogue worksheet?
⌄
Read the lines aloud and ask whether each one was said or only thought. Check the sort and the paragraph marks with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a model about a boy at the snake house, then plan a scene about keeping a secret with lines said aloud and thought. Outer dialogue is said aloud. Inner dialogue is a thought. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, write the character and secret. Then, in the 3 rows, write what is said aloud and thought inside. Then, write how the scene ends. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.
Can I use this inner and outer dialogue worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade narrative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with inner and outer dialogue. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the difference between inner and outer dialogue?
⌄
Outer dialogue is spoken aloud and goes inside quotation marks. Inner dialogue is a thought, often tagged with thought or wondered, like My hands are shaking, Rosa thought. The spelling bee page sorts 8 lines into the two kinds.
When do you start a new paragraph in dialogue?
⌄
Start a new paragraph each time a different character speaks. The relay race page has students mark the 6 places a new speaker starts, then write the next 2 turns as new paragraphs.
How does inner dialogue help a story?
⌄
Thoughts show what a character feels but does not say. In the secret scene planner, what the character says aloud and what the character thinks can differ, which builds tension.
Do these worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Three of the 4 sheets do. The secret scene planner has no key, since every scene is different.
