Choose the Evidence That Fits Each Reason
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Choose the Evidence That Fits Each Reason" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core W.5.1.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on opinion writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. Have your child state the claim in one sentence before planning. Ask what proves each reason, then check the labeling, evidence and weak spots pages with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle the evidence that fits each of 5 reasons for a town skate park, then add a sixth reason. A claim is what you think. Evidence backs up each reason. The directions on the page read: Read the Example and the claim. Then, in Part A, circle the letter of the evidence that fits each of the 5 reasons. Then, in Part B, write a sixth reason with 1 piece of evidence. An answer key is included.
Can I use this opinion essay writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade opinion writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with opinion essay writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are the parts of a 5th grade opinion essay?
⌄
A claim, reasons, evidence for each reason, often a counterclaim with a rebuttal, and a conclusion. The labeling page has children write the job of each of 8 sentences in a made-up essay, then write a rebuttal (W.5.1).
How does my child know if evidence fits a reason?
⌄
Good evidence proves that exact reason. For a skate park keeping skaters safe, riders now skate beside busy traffic fits, but skate parks are the most awesome spots is only an opinion. The evidence page practices this with 5 reasons.
How do you revise an opinion essay?
⌄
Look for weak spots: an off-topic sentence, a reason with no evidence, an opinion called a fact and a conclusion that adds a new reason. The weak spots page finds each one in a made-up essay, then rewrites the conclusion.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
6 of the 12 sheets have one, including the labeling, evidence and weak spots pages. The planners are open, so check that every reason has evidence and the conclusion adds nothing new.
