Plan a Persuasive Speech for a Class Election
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Plan a Persuasive Speech for a Class Election" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core W.4.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on opinion writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing opinion paragraphs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this writing opinion paragraphs worksheet?
⌄
Ask your child to read each reason aloud and then say what proves it. After planning, have them circle every linking word in their draft and check the skill pages with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a made-up model speech about a plant helper, then plan a class leader speech with a hook, 3 promises and a call to vote. To persuade is to get others to agree with your opinion. The directions on the page read: Read the topic and the model. Then, write a greeting and hook. Then, write 3 promises, each with why it helps. Then, write a call to vote. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.
Can I use this writing opinion paragraphs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade opinion writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing opinion paragraphs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the difference between a reason and evidence?
⌄
A reason tells why, like kids need more activity. Evidence proves the reason, like kids need an hour or more of activity a day. The walking club page has children draw a line from each of 4 reasons to its evidence.
Which linking words fit opinion writing?
⌄
Because and since join a reason to the opinion, for example brings in evidence, in addition and also add a reason, however answers the other side and in conclusion starts the closing (W.4.1.C).
Can a speech or a review be an opinion paragraph?
⌄
Yes. A class election speech gives promises and why each helps, and a review gives a star rating, what the writer liked with examples and what could be better. Both state an opinion and back it up.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
The reasons and evidence page, the linking words page and the zoo page have one. The planners are open, so check that every reason has support and that the closing restates the opinion.
