Rearrange Words to Make a New Sentence
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Rearrange Words to Make a New Sentence" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.1.F. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on sentences, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and expanding sentences never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this expanding sentences worksheet?
⌄
Say the kernel sentence aloud and ask a question word to get each new part. Read the long sentence back to check that it still makes sense. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Move the where or when part to the front of a sentence and add a comma after it. A kernel sentence is the shortest sentence with a subject and a verb. You can expand it by adding details. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, move the where or when part to the front and write the new sentence. Put a comma after the part you moved. An answer key is included.
Can I use this expanding sentences worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade sentences, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with expanding sentences. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a kernel sentence?
⌄
A kernel sentence is the smallest complete sentence, a subject and a verb, like The dog ran. Expanding it means adding words that tell more, such as where, when, how or why.
How do I help my child expand a sentence?
⌄
Ask question words one at a time: Where did the dog run? When? Why? Each answer adds a part. The pages give word banks and pictures, so your child can choose a detail before thinking one up.
Why move a part to the front of a sentence?
⌄
Starting some sentences with a where or when part, like After lunch, we played tag, makes writing less repetitive. L.2.1.F asks 2nd graders to expand and rearrange sentences, and the rearranging page practices the comma after the moved part.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All six expanding sentences sheets have an answer key, including the cut and glue page.
What sentence skills should second graders have?
⌄
Second graders should write complete sentences with a subject and predicate, use correct capitalization and end punctuation, and begin combining simple sentences using conjunctions (CCSS L.2.1f). They should distinguish between statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.
How do you help a second grader write better sentences?
⌄
Practice expanding simple sentences by adding adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. Use sentence frames to scaffold writing. Worksheets that ask students to fix incomplete sentences, combine sentences, and add details build sentence construction skills systematically.
