Plan a Fairy Tale With a Twist at the End

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plan a Fairy Tale With a Twist at the End" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.3.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on creative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and story writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this story writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the topic and the model together, then let your child talk the story through before filling in the boxes. After writing, have them read the story aloud and check that every box from the plan shows up in the draft.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a model about a frog who wants to stay a frog, then plan a fairy tale about a baker and a magic oven with a twist. In a fairy tale with magic, a twist is an ending that surprises you. The directions on the page read: Read the topic and the model. Then, write who and where in the once upon a time box. Then, fill in the magic object box and the 3 event boxes, 2 lines each. Then, write the twist. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.

Can I use this story writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade creative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with story writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What should a 3rd grade story have?

⌄

W.3.3 asks for a situation and characters, events in order, dialogue and description, time words and a sense of closure. The checklist on page two names the parts each story needs.

How is a fable different from other stories?

⌄

A fable is a short animal story that teaches a lesson, called the moral. The Fox Who Could Not Sleep has students plan two animal characters, a problem, an ending and a one sentence moral.

How do I help my child show a character's traits?

⌄

Instead of saying the pet is curious, have your child write what the pet does, like sniffing every shoe in the house. A Pet From Outer Space asks for three traits shown through actions.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

No. Every story is different. On the two-page sheets, use the checklist at the bottom of page two to see whether the draft includes each part from the plan. On the one-page planners, check that every box is filled and the draft follows the plan.
