Facts That Support an Opinion, Mark F or O

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Facts That Support an Opinion, Mark F or O" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.1.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on opinion writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and supporting details never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this supporting details worksheet?

⌄

Ask your child why after each reason, and the answer is often the example. Point out signal words like One reason is and For example, then check the sort and choose pages with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Mark 8 sentences from a made-up student's case for park shade trees as F or O, then add a fact. A fact can be checked. An opinion tells what someone thinks. The directions on the page read: Read the Example. Then, in Part A, read the 8 sentences and write F for a fact or O for an opinion in each box. Then, in Part B, write 1 fact of your own that supports Nia's opinion. An answer key is included.

Can I use this supporting details worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade opinion writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with supporting details. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between a reason and an example?

⌄

A reason tells why you think something, like a cozy spot helps kids relax. An example shows the reason in action, like a beanbag makes reading feel comfy. The sort page uses signal words: reasons often start with One reason is or because, and examples start with For example.

Can a fact support an opinion?

⌄

Yes. A fact can be checked, and it makes an opinion stronger. On the park shade page, the opinion is that the park needs more trees, and a fact like the metal slide gets very hot on sunny days backs it up. Words like best and nicer show an opinion instead.

How many reasons should a 3rd grader give?

⌄

Two or three reasons is a good target for one paragraph (W.3.1.B). The planner asks for two reasons, each with an example, which makes a paragraph of about six sentences with the opinion and the closing.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

The 4 sort and choose pages have an answer key, with a sample for each write-your-own question. The planner has no key, since each child picks their own season. Check that each example really shows its reason.
