Character Traits With Evidence Reading Response
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Character Traits With Evidence Reading Response" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reading response never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this reading response worksheet?
⌄
Have your child keep the book open while filling in page one, and ask them to find the page for each detail. Then have them write the response and read it to you.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Fill in a chart of three character traits with evidence and page numbers from a book, then write a reading response. A trait is what a character is like, such as brave or kind. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write the book, the author, and the character. Then, write three traits in the Trait column. Then, next to each trait, write evidence and the page number. Then, write on page 2. On page 2: Use your plan from page 1. Then, write a title. Then, write your reading response on the lines in 8 or more sentences, giving a trait and its evidence from the book in each part. Then, check each box below.
Can I use this reading response worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reading response. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is text evidence for 3rd graders?
⌄
Text evidence is a detail from the book that proves an idea, like the page where a character shares her lunch to show she is kind. Writing the page number lets a reader check it.
How do I help my child find a story's central message?
⌄
Ask what the main character learned and whether it is a lesson for real life too. The Message of a Story has students write three events and what the character learned before stating the message (RL.3.2).
What is Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then?
⌄
It is a five box plan for a short summary: who the chapter is about, what they wanted, what got in the way, what they did and how it ended. It keeps the summary to the main events.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Responses depend on the book your child chose. Check that each idea comes with a detail from the book and that the summary sticks to the main events.
What writing skills do 3rd graders need?
⌄
Third graders write opinion pieces with linked reasons (CCSS W.3.1), informative texts that group facts (W.3.2) and narratives with dialogue and description (W.3.3). They also plan, revise and edit their work (W.3.5) and use capitals, commas and quotation marks correctly (L.3.2).
How do I help my child write a strong opening and ending?
⌄
Teach a hook for the first sentence, like a question to the reader, and a conclusion that restates the main idea in new words. The hook and conclusion sheets give an example and a checklist.
Do the 3rd grade writing worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
The 15 genre and writing skills sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response. The 14 two-page reflective writing and reading response sheets have no key, since each student writes about their own life or book.
