Round on a Number Line to Thousands and Ten Thousands

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Round on a Number Line to Thousands and Ten Thousands" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core 4.NBT.A.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on place value & rounding, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and mixed rounding never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Round on a Number Line to Thousands and Ten Thousands

4th grade math worksheet: circle the nearer end on 8 number lines to round 4,380, 46,200 and more to thousands or ten thousands. Answer key included. Part of our mixed rounding collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently, since students at this age benefit more from productive struggle than from being walked through each step, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These mixed rounding worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.

What students will practice

  • Students will find numbers like 4,380 and 73,100 on 8 number lines.
  • Students will circle the end each dot is closer to and write the rounded number.
  • Students will round a dot on the middle tick, like 15,000, up to the greater end.

FAQ

How do I use this mixed rounding worksheet?

⌄

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently, since students at this age benefit more from productive struggle than from being walked through each step, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the nearer end on 8 number lines to round 4,380, 46,200 and more to thousands or ten thousands. On a number line, a number rounds to the end it is closer to. The directions on the page read: Circle the end each dot is closer to. A dot on the middle tick rounds up to the greater end. Then, write that number in the box. An answer key is included.

Can I use this mixed rounding worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade place value & rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with mixed rounding. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do I introduce a number line to a five year old?

⌄

Treat it as a path rather than a picture: your child puts a finger on a number and hops along it, saying each number as they land. Hopping physically is what makes the line make sense. Reading it as a diagram comes much later.

Why use a number line instead of counting objects?

⌄

Objects show how many. A number line shows order and distance, which objects cannot. It is the first tool that makes the gap between numbers visible, and it becomes essential for skip counting, comparison, and later for negative numbers and fractions.

My child counts the marks instead of the hops. Is that a problem?

⌄

It is the classic number line mistake and worth correcting gently. Count the jumps between numbers, not the numbers themselves. Saying "hop" out loud with each move usually fixes it within a session or two.

How do you round to any place?

⌄

Find the place, then look at the digit to its right. 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down, and every digit to the right becomes 0. 97,525 rounds to 97,530, 97,500 and 98,000 to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand.

What happens when you round up a 9?

⌄

The 9 becomes 0 and the digit to its left goes up by 1. 99,540 to the nearest thousand is 100,000, and 39,962 to the nearest hundred is 40,000.

How can you tell which place a number was rounded to?

⌄

Look at where the zeros start. 47,382 rounded to 47,400 was rounded to the hundreds, and 47,382 rounded to 47,000 was rounded to the thousands.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 7 mixed rounding sheets have an answer key.
