Fair Share Stories With Halves and Fourths

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Fair Share Stories With Halves and Fourths" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core 2.G.A.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and basic fraction word problems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These basic fraction word problems worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.

FAQ

How do I use this basic fraction word problems worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Solve 4 fair share stories about a pizza, a sandwich, a waffle and a cracker in halves and fourths. When people share equally, every share is the same size. The directions on the page read: Read each story. Then, draw lines on the shape when the story asks. Then, write the answer in the box or on the line. An answer key is included.

Can I use this basic fraction word problems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade fractions, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with basic fraction word problems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you solve a fair share story?

⌄

Read how many people share the whole, then draw lines to cut it into that many equal shares. Two people get halves, three get thirds and four get fourths.

What does three thirds mean in a story?

⌄

Three thirds means all 3 equal shares, the whole thing. On Fraction Story Problems With Thirds, children decide whether Ben is right that 3 thirds is the whole bar.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 4 sheets have an answer key. Where children draw their own lines, any cut into equal shares is correct.
