Color a Half, a Third, or a Fourth

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Color a Half, a Third, or a Fourth" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core 2.G.A.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and color the shape to match the fraction never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These color the shape to match the fraction worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.

FAQ

How do I use this color the shape to match the fraction worksheet?

⌄

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Follow 8 lines such as color a third of the rectangle or half of the hexagon by coloring one share. Each shape is cut into equal shares. Half is 1 of 2 shares, a third is 1 of 3, and a fourth is 1 of 4. The directions on the page read: Read the line under each shape. Then, color one share to show that part of the shape. An answer key is included.

Can I use this color the shape to match the fraction worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade fractions, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with color the shape to match the fraction. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does three fourths mean?

⌄

Three fourths means 3 of the 4 equal shares of a whole. To show it, color 3 shares of a shape cut into fourths and leave 1 share white.

Why do some pages ask for two halves or four fourths?

⌄

Two halves and four fourths each mean every share is colored, so the whole shape is colored. Color the Shares Named, Halves and Fourths and Color the Shares Named on Bars include these to show that all the shares together make one whole.

In what order should my child do these pages?

⌄

Start with Color One Half of Each Shape, then One Third and One Fourth, where every shape already shows its equal shares. Move on to the pages that name two or three shares, and finish with the mixed shapes review.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 10 sheets have an answer key that shows one correct way to color each shape.
