Same Size Shares That Look Different
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Same Size Shares That Look Different" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core 2.G.A.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and equal parts worksheets never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade math worksheet: decide if 6 pairs of shaded shares are the same size, such as halves cut straight and on a diagonal. Answer key included. Part of our equal parts worksheets fractions collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These equal parts worksheets worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.
What students will practice
- Students will compare the shaded shares in 6 pairs of shapes.
- Students will circle Same size or Not the same size.
- Students will see that halves cut straight or on a diagonal are the same size.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Decide if 6 pairs of shaded shares are the same size, such as halves cut straight and on a diagonal. Equal shares of the same whole are the same size, even when their shapes look different. The directions on the page read: Look at the shaded share in each pair of shapes. Then, circle Same size or Not the same size. An answer key is included.
Can I use this equal parts worksheets worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade fractions, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with equal parts worksheets. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are equal shares?
⌄
Equal shares are parts of a whole that are all the same size. A circle cut into 4 equal shares is cut into fourths. If one part is bigger than another, the shares are not equal, and Fair Shares or Not Fair Shares asks children to spot those shapes.
What is the difference between halves, thirds and fourths?
⌄
Halves are 2 equal shares, thirds are 3 and fourths are 4. When the same whole is cut into more shares, each share is smaller, so a fourth is smaller than a half. Halves, Thirds, and Fourths in One Whole shows all three on bars of the same length.
Can equal shares have different shapes?
⌄
Yes. A square cut in half with a straight line and a square cut on a diagonal both have halves of the same size. Same Size Shares That Look Different and Shade a Half, a Third, and a Fourth Two Ways practice this idea.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 23 equal parts sheets have an answer key.
