Round to the Nearest Hundred on a Number Line
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Round to the Nearest Hundred on a Number Line" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on place value & rounding, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and round to the nearest hundred never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade math worksheet: use number lines to round 8 numbers like 561 and 295 to the nearest hundred. Answer key included. Part of our round to the nearest hundred place value & rounding collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These round to the nearest hundred worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.
What students will practice
- Students will place numbers like 682 and 220 on a number line between two hundreds.
- Students will circle the hundred each number is closer to.
- Students will write the rounded hundred for 8 numbers.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Use number lines to round 8 numbers like 561 and 295 to the nearest hundred. To round to the nearest hundred, find the hundred the number is closer to on the number line. The directions on the page read: Look at where the red dot is on each number line. Circle the hundred it is closer to. Then, write that hundred in the box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this round to the nearest hundred worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade place value & rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with round to the nearest hundred. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do I introduce a number line to a five year old?
⌄
Treat it as a path rather than a picture: your child puts a finger on a number and hops along it, saying each number as they land. Hopping physically is what makes the line make sense. Reading it as a diagram comes much later.
Why use a number line instead of counting objects?
⌄
Objects show how many. A number line shows order and distance, which objects cannot. It is the first tool that makes the gap between numbers visible, and it becomes essential for skip counting, comparison, and later for negative numbers and fractions.
My child counts the marks instead of the hops. Is that a problem?
⌄
It is the classic number line mistake and worth correcting gently. Count the jumps between numbers, not the numbers themselves. Saying "hop" out loud with each move usually fixes it within a session or two.
Which digit determines whether a 3-digit number rounds up or down to the nearest hundred?
⌄
The tens digit is the key: if it is 5 or greater the number rounds up to the next hundred; if it is 4 or less it rounds down to the current hundred.
How does rounding to the nearest hundred connect to real-world math?
⌄
Estimating prices, distances, and quantities to the nearest hundred is a practical skill students use for everyday mental math and reasonableness checks.
What is a common misconception when rounding to the nearest hundred?
⌄
Students sometimes round based on the ones digit instead of the tens digit - explicit instruction on identifying the correct pivot digit prevents this error.
What place value skills should second graders master?
⌄
Second graders should understand three-digit numbers as hundreds, tens, and ones (CCSS 2.NBT.A.1). They should read and write numbers to 1,000, compare three-digit numbers using place value understanding, and use expanded form (345 = 300 + 40 + 5).
How do you teach three-digit place value?
⌄
Extend the base-ten block model: ones cubes, tens rods, and hundreds flats. Have students build numbers like 253 using blocks, then write them in standard form, expanded form, and word form. Worksheets that move between these three representations build flexible understanding.
What is expanded form and why do second graders learn it?
⌄
Expanded form breaks a number into its place value components: 426 = 400 + 20 + 6. It shows what each digit is actually worth, which is essential for understanding addition and subtraction algorithms. Worksheets that ask students to convert between standard and expanded form reinforce this understanding.
