Fraction Strips, Thirds and Sixths
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Fraction Strips, Thirds and Sixths" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.NF.A.3.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions and decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fraction strips never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: use thirds and sixths strips to answer 8 questions, such as how many sixths are in 1/3. Answer key included. Part of our fraction strips fractions and decimals collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?

FAQ
How do I use this fraction strips worksheet?
⌄
Start with Label Each Part of a Fraction Strip so your child sees that every part is a unit fraction. Then shade and write fractions, and save the fraction wall and word problem pages for last.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Use thirds and sixths strips to answer 8 questions, such as how many sixths are in 1/3. A fraction strip shows one whole cut into equal parts. Strips of the same whole line up, so you can compare their parts. The directions on the page read: Use the strips at the top to answer questions 1 to 8. Write a number in a box or a fraction on the line, shade, or circle Yes or No. An answer key is included.
Can I use this fraction strips worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fraction strips. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a fraction strip?
⌄
A fraction strip is a bar that stands for one whole, cut into equal parts. A strip cut into 4 parts shows fourths, and each part is 1/4.
What is a fraction wall?
⌄
A fraction wall stacks strips of the same whole, from 1 whole at the top down to eighths. Build a Fraction Wall has children fill one in, and Use a Fraction Wall to Compare uses it to compare pairs such as 5/6 and 5/8.
How do fraction strips show equal fractions?
⌄
Two fractions are equal when their shaded parts are the same length on strips of the same whole. On Find Equal Fractions on Fraction Strips, 1/2 lines up with 2/4 and 3/4 with 6/8.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 10 fraction strips sheets have an answer key.
