Use a Fraction Wall to Compare

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Use a Fraction Wall to Compare" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.NF.A.3.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions and decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fraction strips never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3.NF.A.3.D

Standard: Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

FAQ

How do I use this fraction strips worksheet?

⌄

Start with Label Each Part of a Fraction Strip so your child sees that every part is a unit fraction. Then shade and write fractions, and save the fraction wall and word problem pages for last.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Use a fraction wall to compare 6 pairs with the same numerator, such as 1/3 and 1/4, with symbols. Compare fractions only for wholes of the same size. Use greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=). The directions on the page read: Find both fractions on the fraction wall. Then, write greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=) in the box. An answer key is included.

Can I use this fraction strips worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fraction strips. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a fraction strip?

⌄

A fraction strip is a bar that stands for one whole, cut into equal parts. A strip cut into 4 parts shows fourths, and each part is 1/4.

What is a fraction wall?

⌄

A fraction wall stacks strips of the same whole, from 1 whole at the top down to eighths. Build a Fraction Wall has children fill one in, and Use a Fraction Wall to Compare uses it to compare pairs such as 5/6 and 5/8.

How do fraction strips show equal fractions?

⌄

Two fractions are equal when their shaded parts are the same length on strips of the same whole. On Find Equal Fractions on Fraction Strips, 1/2 lines up with 2/4 and 3/4 with 6/8.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 10 fraction strips sheets have an answer key.
