Read the Busy Ant Passage Smoothly

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Read the Busy Ant Passage Smoothly" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.4.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on reading sentences, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reading fluency never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this reading fluency worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read the passage once for practice, then time one minute for each of the 3 reads and fill in the chart together so your child sees the number grow. Reread the phrases on page 2 before the questions. Check the answers with the answer key, which names the line that holds each answer.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read The Busy Ant, a 71 word passage, 3 times as an adult times it and reread phrases like dig tunnels. Fluency is reading smoothly, at a good speed, with expression. The gray numbers count the words up to the end of each line. The directions on the page read: Read the passage aloud 3 times. An adult times one minute of each read and writes the words read and the errors in the chart. On page 2: Read each phrase 3 times. Check a box each time. Then, answer questions 1 and 2. Then, write a new sentence on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this reading fluency worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade reading sentences, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reading fluency. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is reading fluency in 1st grade?

⌄

Reading fluency is reading smoothly, at a good speed and with expression. In 1st grade, children practice it by reading the same on level text aloud several times, which is CCSS RF.1.4.B: reading with accuracy, rate and expression on successive readings.

How do I time a one minute read?

⌄

Start a timer when your child reads the first word and stop at one minute. The gray number at the end of each line counts the words up to that point, so add the words read on the last line to find the total. Write it in the chart for Read 1, Read 2 and Read 3, along with any errors on the passage pages.

What are the slashes on the phrase pages for?

⌄

Each blue slash marks a pause between two phrases, as in Frogs can hop / on long legs. Pausing there helps children read groups of words together instead of one word at a time, which makes the reading sound like talking.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 10 reading fluency sheets have an answer key with the multiple choice answers, the line in the passage that holds each answer and sample sentences.
