Spelling List of Scr, Spl, Str and Spr Words

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Spelling List of Scr, Spl, Str and Spr Words" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and spelling list practice never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

⌄

Read the list aloud and have your child mark the shared pattern in each word. Use the fold and cover column for a quick self test, then finish the sentences. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read, write and spell 15 blend words like scribble, splinter and strength, then finish 2 sentences. A three-letter blend is three consonants whose sounds you hear together, as in scrub, splat, strap and spray. The directions on the page read: Read and say each word. Then, write it. Then, fold on the dashed line, cover the words and spell each one. Then, finish each sentence with a list word. An answer key is included.

Can I use this spelling list practice worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling list practice. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a three letter blend?

⌄

Three consonants whose sounds you hear together at the start of a word, like scr in scrape, spl in splash, str in stream and spr in spring.

When do c and g make a soft sound?

⌄

C and g usually sound like s and j before e, i or y, as in city, cycle, gentle and giant. Before a, o or u they are usually hard.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 5 4th grade spelling list sheets have an answer key.
