A word chain changes one sound at a time to make a new word, so dog might become a word that differs by a single letter. The word dog is a consonant, vowel, consonant word, so it splits cleanly into /d/ /o/ /g/. Changing only one sound at a time is what shows a child that letters carry meaning, and that swapping one changes the whole word.

Three sounds is about as much as a beginning reader can hold in mind while blending. Short words like dog let your child practice the full skill, hearing each sound and putting them back together, without the working memory load of a longer word.
