Circle the CVC Word for the Picture, Set 3
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Circle the CVC Word for the Picture, Set 3" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RF.K.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and CVC words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Kindergarten phonics worksheet: read 3 words like mop, map and cap under each picture and circle the CVC word that names it. Answer key included. Part of our CVC words vowels collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights cvc words so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through it with your modeling first (do the first item together on the board), then try the rest with a partner, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These cvc words worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.
What students will practice
- Students will name the pictures map, web, six, mop, rug and bag with an adult.
- Students will read three choices such as mop, map and cap under each picture.
- Students will circle the CVC word that names each picture.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read 3 words like mop, map and cap under each picture and circle the CVC word that names it. The directions on the page read: An adult says each picture name aloud with the student. Read the 3 words under each picture. Then, circle the word that names the picture. An adult may help read the words. An answer key is included.
Can I use this CVC words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with CVC words. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A three letter word with a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, such as hat, pen, pig, fox or bus. Each letter makes one sound, so children can say the sounds and blend them into the word.
How do sound boxes help with CVC words?
⌄
Each box holds one sound. On the sound box pages the child traces the letter in each box for words like map, web and six, says each sound, then blends the three sounds to read the word.
Can an adult help with the reading?
⌄
Yes. On the circle the word and read and match pages an adult says each picture name aloud first and may help read the words. The trace and copy pages show each word to trace before the child copies it.
What vowel skills do kindergarteners learn?
⌄
They learn the short sound of a, e, i, o and u, hear that sound in the middle of a word like pig or fox, and read CVC words such as cat, bed and sun (CCSS RF.K.2.D and RF.K.3.B). Long vowels and silent e words like cake come next.
How can I tell if my child hears short vowel sounds?
⌄
Say a word like hat and ask which sound is in the middle. The identify short vowels pages ask children to color the short a pictures, cut and glue pictures under short e or short o, and circle a, e, i, o or u for words like nest and bus.
How many vowels worksheets are there for Kindergarten?
⌄
93 sheets on short and long vowels, CVC words, silent e words, word families and vowel blends. 64 of the 93 sheets have an answer key.
