Color the Short U Pictures
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Color the Short U Pictures" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RF.K.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and identify short vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Kindergarten phonics worksheet: color the pictures with the short u sound of umbrella, like sun, bus, drum and cup, then trace u. Answer key included. Part of our identify short vowels collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights identify short vowels so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through it with your modeling first (do the first item together on the board), then try the rest with a partner, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These identify short vowels worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Color the pictures with the short u sound of umbrella, like sun, bus, drum and cup, then trace u. The directions on the page read: An adult says each picture name aloud with the student. Color each picture that has the short u sound, like umbrella. Then, trace the letter u two times at the bottom. An answer key is included.
Can I use this identify short vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with identify short vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does identifying short vowels teach a child?
⌄
Identifying short vowels trains children to isolate the medial (middle) sound in a word, which is the hardest sound position for most beginners. This auditory and visual discrimination is essential before children can spell or decode CVC words independently.
When should kindergarteners be able to identify short vowel sounds?
⌄
By mid-to-late kindergarten, most students are expected to identify and produce short vowel sounds when prompted. If a child is still struggling by the end of the year, targeted short vowel intervention in first grade is common.
How can I use these worksheets to check my child's progress?
⌄
Sit with your child as they complete the worksheet and note which vowels they hesitate on or get wrong. That pattern tells you exactly which sound to focus on in follow-up flashcard or word-building games.
What vowel skills do kindergarteners learn?
⌄
They learn the short sound of a, e, i, o and u, hear that sound in the middle of a word like pig or fox, and read CVC words such as cat, bed and sun (CCSS RF.K.2.D and RF.K.3.B). Long vowels and silent e words like cake come next.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A three letter word made of a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like map, web or rug. The CVC pages have children trace and copy these words, circle the word that names a picture, and trace each sound in sound boxes before reading the word.
How can I tell if my child hears short vowel sounds?
⌄
Say a word like hat and ask which sound is in the middle. The identify short vowels pages ask children to color the short a pictures, cut and glue pictures under short e or short o, and circle a, e, i, o or u for words like nest and bus.
How many vowels worksheets are there for Kindergarten?
⌄
93 sheets on short and long vowels, CVC words, silent e words, word families and vowel blends. 64 of the 93 sheets have an answer key.
