Dge or Ge, Pick the Spelling
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Dge or Ge, Pick the Spelling" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and soft c and g never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade phonics worksheet: circle dge or ge spellings like bridge or brige and fudge or fuge, then write the right word. Answer key included. Part of our soft c and g phonics collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with the hard or soft sorts and have your child say each word aloud before writing it. Point to the letter after c or g each time, so the rule becomes a habit. Check with the answer key.
What students will practice
- Students will choose between dge and ge spellings like bridge or brige and page or padge.
- Students will use the rule that dge follows a short vowel to check badge, huge and fudge.
- Students will write the correctly spelled word, such as stage, under each sentence.

FAQ
How do I use this soft c and g worksheet?
⌄
Start with the hard or soft sorts and have your child say each word aloud before writing it. Point to the letter after c or g each time, so the rule becomes a habit. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle dge or ge spellings like bridge or brige and fudge or fuge, then write the right word. A soft g says j. At the end of a word, it is spelled dge after a short vowel and ge after other sounds. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Circle the word that is spelled the right way. Then, write the word on the line. An answer key is included.
Can I use this soft c and g worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with soft c and g. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are soft c and soft g?
⌄
A soft c makes the s sound, as in cent and face. A soft g makes the j sound, as in gem and cage. A hard c says k, as in cat, and a hard g says g, as in goat.
How can my child tell if c or g is soft?
⌄
Look at the letter right after it. C and g are usually soft before e, i or y and hard before a, o or u. Two rule pages have children circle that letter in words like center, camel, germ and wagon, then mark the sound. A few words, like get and girl, break the g rule.
When is the j sound at the end of a word spelled dge?
⌄
Use dge right after a short vowel, as in badge, bridge and fudge. Use ge after a long vowel or a consonant, as in cage, huge and orange. One sort and one pick the spelling page practice this rule.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 12 soft c and g sheets have an answer key.
