Circle the Word That Rhymes

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Circle the Word That Rhymes" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and words that rhyme never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this words that rhyme worksheet?

⌄

Read each word aloud and stretch out the ending so your child hears it. On the long vowel page, remind them to listen to the sound, not the spelling. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the word that rhymes with 10 short vowel words like hat, ring and duck. Words rhyme when they end with the same sound, like fish and dish. The directions on the page read: Read the word in the box. Then, circle the word that rhymes with it. An answer key is included.

Can I use this words that rhyme worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with words that rhyme. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What makes two words rhyme?

⌄

They end with the same sound, like cat and mat. The spelling does not have to match: glue rhymes with shoe, and play rhymes with weigh, as children find on the long vowel page.

How do the poem pages work?

⌄

Children read a short made up poem, circle the rhyming words at the ends of the lines, write the 4 rhyming pairs and then write one more word that rhymes, such as a rhyme for tall or gray.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 5 words that rhyme sheets have an answer key.
