Hidden Letters in Land and Water Words
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Hidden Letters in Land and Water Words" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core L.3.2.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and hidden letters never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this hidden letters worksheet?
⌄
Read the Word List aloud together first. Have your child count the boxes in a row to find the word, then fill in the missing letters and say the word. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Spell 6 land and water words like ocean, desert and canyon by filling in hidden letters 4 times each. In a hidden letters puzzle, some letters of a word are missing. You write the missing letters to spell the whole word. The directions on the page read: Read the 6 words in the Word List. Each word is shown 4 times with different letters hidden. Write the missing letter in each empty box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this hidden letters worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with hidden letters. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How does a hidden letters puzzle help with spelling?
⌄
Each word is shown 4 times with a different set of letters missing, so your child has to think about every part of the word, not just the start. Writing the same word several times in a row helps the spelling stick.
Why are words like grateful and nervous hard to spell?
⌄
Endings like ful and ous sound different from how they are spelled, and double letters like the cc in soccer are easy to miss. Seeing each word with different letters hidden makes your child check every part of it.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 4 3rd grade hidden letters sheets have an answer key that fills in every missing letter.
