Penguin Body Parts, Read and Label

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Penguin Body Parts, Read and Label" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on animals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and animal anatomy never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this animal anatomy worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage aloud and point to each bold word in the picture before your child labels the diagram. Ask what each part helps the animal do. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read about an emperor penguin, label its beak, flippers, webbed feet and feathers, then answer questions. A diagram is a picture with labels that name the parts of something. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Look for the bold words. Then, use them to label the diagram on the next page. On page 2: Write each word from the word bank on the line at the end of its leader line. Then, circle the best answers and write on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this animal anatomy worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade animals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with animal anatomy. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What do animal anatomy worksheets teach second graders?

⌄

Second graders learn to identify and label the major external body structures of animals from different groups, the fins and gills of a fish, the wings and beak of a bird, the antennae and exoskeleton of an insect, the limbs and fur of a mammal. They compare these structures across animal groups and begin to explain how each structure serves a function. This builds on animal classification knowledge and prepares students for deeper study of adaptation and body systems in later grades.

When do second graders learn about animal anatomy?

⌄

Animal anatomy is addressed in Grade 2 life science as an extension of classification and adaptation units. While kindergarten and Grade 1 focus on sorting animals and identifying coverings, Grade 2 introduces the idea that body structures have specific functions. This concept is central to NGSS life science progression from structure to function to adaptation.

How can I use these worksheets at home?

⌄

Choose an animal your child is curious about and look up a labeled diagram together online. Identify each body part and talk about what it does, why does a fish have a streamlined body? Why does a bird have hollow bones? Then use the worksheet to label a different animal and write one function next to each part. Connecting structure to function is the key thinking skill this topic builds.

How many 2nd Grade animal anatomy worksheets are there?

⌄

8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are animal anatomy worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
