Life on the Cold Arctic Tundra, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Life on the Cold Arctic Tundra, Read and Answer" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-LS4-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on animals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and named habitats never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this named habitats worksheet?

⌄

Find each habitat on a map or globe before you read, and ask your child what the weather is like there. After each passage, name one animal and the body part that helps it live there. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how permafrost keeps trees off the Arctic tundra and why the arctic fox turns white, then answer. Permafrost is ground that stays frozen all year. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this named habitats worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade animals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with named habitats. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

Which habitats do these worksheets cover?

⌄

A pond, a rainforest, the Arctic tundra, a coral reef, a prairie grassland, a rotting log, a rocky tide pool, caves, a swamp, the mountains, a kelp forest, the ocean and the desert. Each newer sheet has a short passage about one habitat and questions on the second page.

Why do different habitats have different animals?

⌄

Each habitat has its own weather, water and food, and each animal has body parts that suit its home. An arctic fox has thick fur that turns white in winter, and most pond fish could not live in salty ocean water (2-LS4-1).

What does diversity mean?

⌄

Diversity means having many kinds of living things in one place. A pond has lots of diversity, with cattails, frogs, turtles, ducks, dragonflies, fish and snails, and more kinds of plants and animals live in a rainforest than in most other places on land.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 15 habitat sheets have an answer key, and the newer two page sheets give sample answers for the questions children answer in their own words.
