Ice Cubes in Sun, Shade and a Freezer, Read the Table

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ice Cubes in Sun, Shade and a Freezer, Read the Table" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-PS1-4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on material properties, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reversible and irreversible changes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this reversible and irreversible changes worksheet?

⌄

Melt an ice cube in a dish, then put the water back in the freezer, and talk about whether toast could ever turn back into bread. Read each passage together and check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read one class's table where an ice cube melted in 20 minutes on a sunny windowsill and 45 in the shade. Something reversible can be undone. The directions on the page read: Read the passage and the table. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the passage and the table on page 1. Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this reversible and irreversible changes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade material properties, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reversible and irreversible changes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between a reversible and an irreversible change?

⌄

A reversible change can be undone, and an irreversible change cannot. Melted butter cools and becomes solid again in the refrigerator, so melting is reversible. A cooked egg stays white and firm when it cools, and toast never turns back into soft bread, so those changes are irreversible (2-PS1-4).

Is melting ice a reversible change?

⌄

Yes. Melted water can freeze back into ice. In one class's test, an ice cube melted in 20 minutes on a sunny windowsill and in 45 minutes on a shady shelf, while the cube in the freezer did not melt.

Which kitchen changes cannot be undone?

⌄

Cooking an egg, baking bread, toasting bread and baking cookie dough into cookies. Once baked, cookies stay cookies for good. Melting chocolate is different: it turns solid again in the refrigerator.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 9 sheets have an answer key.
