See-Through or Not? Read and Sort

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"See-Through or Not? Read and Sort" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-PS1-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on material properties, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and sorting by properties never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this sorting by properties worksheet?

⌄

Before each page, let your child try the test with real objects, such as pressing a pillow and a spoon or dropping a cork and a key in a bowl of water. Then read, sort and check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read about transparent and opaque, then sort plastic wrap and a window pane from a wooden door and pan. Something opaque does not let light pass through. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page, sort the cards and answer the questions. On page 2: Write each card from the Card Bank on a line in the column where it belongs, lines 1 to 6. Then, write the answers to questions 7 and 8 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this sorting by properties worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade material properties, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sorting by properties. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What properties can second graders sort by?

⌄

These pages sort by hardness (hard or soft), flexibility (bends or snaps), floating or sinking, and whether light passes through (transparent or opaque). A Venn diagram page sorts nine objects as round, smooth or both (2-PS1-1).

What is the difference between flexible and brittle?

⌄

Flexible things bend without breaking, like a pipe cleaner, a garden hose or a strip of paper. Brittle things break instead of bending, like a dry spaghetti noodle, a stick of chalk or a cracker.

What do transparent and opaque mean?

⌄

Transparent means light passes through, so you can see through it, like plastic wrap or a window pane. Opaque means light is blocked, like a wooden door or a metal pan, which makes a shadow.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 5 sheets have an answer key, and the sort keys accept the cards in any order within a column.
