New Leaves on Three Watered Plants, Read the Graph
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"New Leaves on Three Watered Plants, Read the Graph" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-LS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on plants, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and plant needs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this plant needs worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read one class's bar graph where a pot watered every day grew 11 new leaves and the driest only 3. A bar graph is a chart that uses bars to show numbers. The directions on the page read: Read the passage and the bar graph. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the passage and the bar graph on page 1. Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this plant needs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade plants, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with plant needs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do plants need to grow?
⌄
Plants need light, water, air and soil, and room to grow. Plants use light to make their own food. In one class's test, a bean plant in a dark closet grew pale yellow leaves and a thin, weak stem, while the one by a sunny window grew green leaves and a strong stem (2-LS2-1).
Can a plant get too much water?
⌄
Yes. Roots need air as well as water. Soil that stays soggy fills its tiny air spaces with water, and the leaves can turn yellow and droop. Many houseplants grow best when watered only after the top of the soil feels dry.
Why does a plant bend toward a window?
⌄
Bending helps its leaves get more light, so the plant can make more food. Turn the pot around, and in a few days a geranium's stems and leaves bend back toward the window.
Do these worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Yes. All 9 sheets have an answer key.
