How Dandelion Seeds Ride the Wind, Read and Answer
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"How Dandelion Seeds Ride the Wind, Read and Answer" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers NGSS 2-LS2-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on plants, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and seed dispersal never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read how a dandelion puffball's seeds hang from tiny parachutes and ride the wind to new spots to grow. A parent plant is the plant that makes the seeds. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this seed dispersal worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade plants, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with seed dispersal. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is seed dispersal?
⌄
Seed dispersal means seeds are carried away from the parent plant, the plant that made them. Spreading out helps, because each new plant gets room to grow, and crowded plants do not grow well (2-LS2-2).
How do animals spread seeds?
⌄
A squirrel buries acorns to eat in winter and forgets some, which can sprout into oak trees. Birds eat cherries and drop the pits far away. Burrs have tiny hooks that catch on a dog's fur and fall off in a new place.
How do wind and water carry seeds?
⌄
Light seeds fly. Dandelion seeds hang from fluffy parachutes, maple seeds spin on one thin wing and milkweed seeds have silky hairs. A coconut's husk holds air, so it floats on the ocean, sometimes for many weeks, to a new beach.
Do these worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Yes. All 7 sheets have an answer key.
