A sentence can be grammatically fine and still communicate poorly if the word choice is vague or slightly off, which is exactly why this skill is taught separately from grammar. The ocean is small is a complete sentence, but it undersells what the writer probably means, which is closer to vast or enormous. Third grade is when students start noticing that gap in their own writing.

How can I help my child practice this skill during regular reading time?

Pause on an unfamiliar word mid-story and ask your child to guess its meaning from what's happening around it before you tell them what it means or reach for a dictionary.
