Characteristics of a Veteran

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Characteristics of a Veteran" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core L.3.1.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on word practice, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and Veterans Day vocabulary never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this Veterans Day vocabulary worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Circle the adjectives that best describe a veteran. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Twelve adjectives (brave, lazy, loyal, selfish, courageous, proud, honorable, patriotic, careless, respectful, disloyal and decorated) for children to read, circling the ones that best describe a veteran. A writing box asks them to choose one adjective they circled and explain why it describes a veteran. The directions on the page read: Circle the adjectives that best describe a veteran. An answer key is included.

Can I use this Veterans Day vocabulary worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade word practice, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with Veterans Day vocabulary. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an adjective?

⌄

An adjective is a describing word. It tells what someone or something is like, such as brave, loyal or proud. On the Describing Veterans sheets children choose between pairs like strong or weak, then use the adjective in a sentence.

What is a character trait?

⌄

A character trait tells what a person is like inside, such as honest, caring or hardworking. The word map has children write a trait that describes a veteran in each circle around the word Veteran.
