Circle the Irregular Past Tense Verb

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Circle the Irregular Past Tense Verb" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core L.1.1.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on verbs, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and past tense verbs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Circle the Irregular Past Tense Verb
Circle the Irregular Past Tense Verb

1st grade grammar worksheet: circle the right past tense in 8 sentences, picking irregular verbs like went, ate, ran and sang. Answer key included. Part of our past tense verbs collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Introduce the skill with a brief whole-class activity, such as calling out examples and asking students to give a thumbs up when they hear past tense verbs in a sentence. Then let students work through the first item together as a class, then finish the rest independently or with a partner, referring to a class anchor chart if one is available. When reviewing answers, ask students to explain why an answer is correct rather than just confirming it. These past tense verbs worksheets work well as a focused practice activity, a homework assignment, or a warm-up at the start of a language arts lesson.

What students will practice

  • Students will read 8 sentences about the past, like Yesterday I went to the park.
  • Students will circle the right irregular past tense, such as went, ate, ran, saw and sang.
  • Students will learn that an irregular verb changes to a new word instead of adding ed.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the right past tense in 8 sentences, picking irregular verbs like went, ate, ran and sang. An irregular verb changes its spelling in the past tense. It does not add ed. Example: is changes to was. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, circle the right past tense of the verb for the sentence. An answer key is included.

Can I use this past tense verbs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade verbs, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with past tense verbs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an irregular past tense verb?

⌄

It is a verb that changes to a new word in the past tense instead of adding ed, like go and went or eat and ate. Four pages practice verbs like ran, sat, came, swam, wrote and fell.

How can my child tell when to add ed?

⌄

Say the verb in a sentence that starts with Yesterday. If ed sounds right, as in Yesterday I jumped, the verb adds ed. If not, it changes to a new word. The sort page puts 12 verbs like walked, dug and said into these two groups.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

6 of the 10 sheets have an answer key, including all 4 irregular past tense pages.
