All About Elephants
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"All About Elephants" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and informative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade writing worksheet: read a fact card on an elephant's trunk and big ears, then plan an all about report with a topic sentence and 3 facts. Part of our informative writing collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Read the facts together and check off the ones your child will use. Have your child say the topic sentence out loud first, then write facts in their own words. For a how-to page, act out each step before writing it down.
What students will practice
- Students will write a topic sentence that names the main idea.
- Students will use facts in their own words to support a topic.
- Students will write how-to steps in order with time-order words and end with a concluding sentence.

FAQ
How do I use this informative writing worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a fact card on an elephant's trunk and big ears, then plan an all about report with a topic sentence and 3 facts. A fact is true. A topic sentence tells what a report is about. The directions on the page read: Read the fact card. Then, write a topic sentence. Then, pick 3 facts and write each one in your own words. Then, write a closing sentence. Then, use your plan to write your report on lined paper.
Can I use this informative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does 2nd grade informative writing require?
⌄
CCSS W.2.2 asks second graders to introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement. The All About sheets supply fact cards or a fact box so students practice organizing and writing them, and the how-to sheets ask for steps children already know.
What is a topic sentence?
⌄
A topic sentence names what the paragraph is about, usually in the first sentence, like "Owls are birds that hunt at night." The facts that follow tell more about the topic.
What goes in a how-to piece?
⌄
A list of materials, then steps in order that start with time-order words like first, next, then and last, and a closing sentence. The how-to sheets show a short model by a made-up student, such as how to fold a napkin, before children write their own.
Do the informative worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Eleven do. Ten All About sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model paragraph, and Number the Steps to Repot a Plant has a key for the step order. The 8 how-to sheets and the 6 All About report plans have no key, since each child writes in their own words.
