Should Kids Choose Their Own Bedtime
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Should Kids Choose Their Own Bedtime" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and opinion writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade writing worksheet: read a made-up model about music on the bus, then list reasons for and against kids picking their own bedtime and pick a side. Part of our opinion writing collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Read the topic together and let your child say the opinion and two reasons out loud first. Write each reason on a separate line, then add a closing sentence. Where a sheet has an answer key, use it to compare structure, not exact words.
What students will practice
- Students will state an opinion and support it with two reasons.
- Students will join ideas with because and also.
- Students will end with a closing sentence that repeats the opinion.

FAQ
How do I use this opinion writing worksheet?
⌄
Read the topic together and let your child say the opinion and two reasons out loud first. Write each reason on a separate line, then add a closing sentence. Where a sheet has an answer key, use it to compare structure, not exact words.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a made-up model about music on the bus, then list reasons for and against kids picking their own bedtime and pick a side. An opinion is what you think. A reason tells why. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write reasons for and against, one on each line. Then, pick a side and write your opinion. Then, write a closing. Then, write your paragraph on lined paper with linking words.
Can I use this opinion writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with opinion writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does 2nd grade opinion writing require?
⌄
CCSS W.2.1 asks second graders to introduce a topic, state an opinion, give reasons that support it, use linking words like because and also, and write a concluding statement. Each sheet scaffolds those parts with boxes, a chart or a model.
How many reasons should a 2nd grader give?
⌄
Two reasons is a good target. Ask for a reason, then ask for a second one that is different, joined with also or another reason. A short closing sentence that repeats the opinion completes the piece.
What if my child cannot think of reasons?
⌄
Try a chart of reasons for and against, as Should Kids Choose Their Own Bedtime and Should Kids Have Jobs at Home do, and think of reasons for both sides first. Then pick the side with the better reasons.
Do the opinion worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Ten sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model piece. The eight planners have no key, since each child picks a side. Check for an opinion, two reasons and a closing, as the checklist on the three two-page planners asks.
