Edit Sentences for Contractions and Apostrophes

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Edit Sentences for Contractions and Apostrophes" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.2.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing process never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this writing process worksheet?

⌄

Use the pages in order or pair each one with a piece of writing your child is already doing. Read the example together before the practice. Have your child say what changed and why the new version is better.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Edit sentences for missing apostrophes in contractions, then write two sentences of your own. A contraction joins two words with an apostrophe. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, fix each word that is missing its apostrophe, or join the two underlined words. Then, write the contraction on the line. Then, write 2 sentences of your own that use a contraction. An answer key is included.

Can I use this writing process worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing process. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the writing process in 2nd grade?

⌄

Second graders plan, draft, revise and edit with guidance (CCSS W.2.5). These eighteen sheets take one step each, from planners for stories, letters and reports to editing for capitals, commas, apostrophes and spelling.

What are transition words?

⌄

Transition words such as first, next, then and finally tell the reader what comes next and show the order of ideas. The transition sheet asks students to add one to the start of each sentence in a draft.

How do I teach a topic sentence and a closing sentence?

⌄

A topic sentence opens a paragraph and tells the main idea. A closing sentence ends it by saying the big idea again in new words. Two sheets practice each by reading a paragraph and writing the sentence.

Do these writing process worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Twelve of the eighteen sheets have an answer key. The six planners, for a small moment story, a how to, an opinion, five senses details, a friendly letter and an animal report, have no key, since each child plans their own piece.

What writing skills should 2nd graders have?

⌄

Second graders write opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.2.1), informative paragraphs with facts and a conclusion (W.2.2), and narratives with details, feelings and time words (W.2.3). They also begin to revise and edit with guidance (W.2.5).

What is the difference between an opinion, a narrative and an informative piece?

⌄

An opinion tells what the writer thinks and why. A narrative tells a story in order. An informative piece teaches true facts about a topic. Each page in this topic names its type in the title, so you can choose the one you need.

How long should a 2nd grade paragraph be?

⌄

Four to seven sentences is typical: a topic or opinion sentence, two or three supporting sentences and a closing sentence. The planning boxes on these pages help children organize before they write.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Not every sheet. 42 sheets have an answer key, including twelve of the eighteen writing process sheets. The 16 how-to, reading response and planning sheets have no key, since each child writes their own steps, plan or response to their own book.
