Imperative Sentences in a How To
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Imperative Sentences in a How To" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on sentences, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and imperative sentences never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade grammar worksheet: circle the 6 command verbs in a how to make a fruit cup, then write 3 steps for watering a plant. Answer key included. Part of our imperative sentences collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Introduce the skill with a brief whole-class activity, such as calling out examples and asking students to give a thumbs up when they hear imperative sentences in a sentence. Then let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, referring to a class anchor chart if one is available. When reviewing answers, ask students to explain why an answer is correct rather than just confirming it. These imperative sentences worksheets work well as a focused practice activity, a homework assignment, or a warm-up at the start of a language arts lesson.
What students will practice

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle the 6 command verbs in a how to make a fruit cup, then write 3 steps for watering a plant. Steps in a how-to are imperative sentences. Each step starts with a verb that tells what to do. The directions on the page read: Read the steps in Part A. Then, circle the verb at the start of each step, 6 in all. Then, in Part B, write 3 steps for how to water a plant. An answer key is included.
Can I use this imperative sentences worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade sentences, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with imperative sentences. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the subject of an imperative sentence?
⌄
The subject is you, but it is not said. In Hand me the red marker, you are the one being asked to hand it over. That is why most commands start with a verb.
Does an imperative sentence end with a period or an exclamation point?
⌄
A calm or polite command ends with a period, as in Please close the door. An urgent command ends with an exclamation point, as in Watch out for that car! One page has children add the mark to 10 commands.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 4 3rd grade imperative sentences sheets have an answer key.
