Find the Pattern Unit

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Find the Pattern Unit" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and shape patterns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Can I use this shape patterns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with shape patterns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

A growing pattern gets bigger by the same number of shapes at each step, such as 1, 2 and 3 triangles. On the growing patterns page children look at steps 1 to 3, draw step 4 and write how many shapes it has.

⌄

Each letter stands for one shape, and the same letter always means the same shape. AABB means 2 of one shape, then 2 of another, like circle, circle, star, star. The make your own page uses the letters so children build AB, ABC, AAB and ABB patterns from a circle, a square and a triangle.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 10 sheets have an answer key with the answer shapes drawn in green. The make your own page shows a sample for each row, since answers will vary.
