Shape Patterns ABBC
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Shape Patterns ABBC" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and shape patterns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

1st grade math worksheet: draw the next 2 shapes in 8 ABBC patterns of one shape, 2 of a second shape and a third shape. Answer key included. Part of our shape patterns geometry collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Have your child read each pattern aloud, such as circle, star, circle, star, and clap at the start of each repeat. Then they draw the answer and read the whole row again to check that it still sounds right.
What students will practice
- Students will learn that an ABBC pattern repeats 1 shape, 2 of a second shape and 1 of a third.
- Students will continue 8 ABBC patterns.
- Students will draw the next 2 shapes in the empty boxes at the end of each row.

FAQ
How do I use this shape patterns worksheet?
⌄
Have your child read each pattern aloud, such as circle, star, circle, star, and clap at the start of each repeat. Then they draw the answer and read the whole row again to check that it still sounds right.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Draw the next 2 shapes in 8 ABBC patterns of one shape, 2 of a second shape and a third shape. An ABBC pattern repeats one shape, then 2 of a second shape, then a third shape. The directions on the page read: Look at each pattern. Then, find the next 2 shapes. Then, draw them in the 2 empty boxes. An answer key is included.
Can I use this shape patterns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with shape patterns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a pattern unit?
⌄
The pattern unit is the part of a pattern that repeats. In circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle, the unit is circle, square, triangle. Finding the unit first makes it easy to say what comes next, and one page asks children to ring the first unit in 8 patterns.
What is a growing pattern?
⌄
A growing pattern gets bigger by the same number of shapes at each step, such as 1, 2 and 3 triangles. On the growing patterns page children look at steps 1 to 3, draw step 4 and write how many shapes it has.
What do the letters in ABC or AABB mean?
⌄
Each letter stands for one shape, and the same letter always means the same shape. AABB means 2 of one shape, then 2 of another, like circle, circle, star, star. The make your own page uses the letters so children build AB, ABC, AAB and ABB patterns from a circle, a square and a triangle.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 10 sheets have an answer key with the answer shapes drawn in green. The make your own page shows a sample for each row, since answers will vary.
