Fact Families With Sums to 100

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Fact Families With Sums to 100" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core 2.NBT.B.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fact families never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Fact Families With Sums to 100

2nd grade math worksheet: write 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts for 6 fact family triangles with sums like 61 and 98. Answer key included. Part of our fact families collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These fact families worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.

What students will practice

  • Students will read 3 numbers in each triangle, with the sum at the top.
  • Students will write 4 related facts for 6 families with sums from 42 to 98.
  • Students will add and subtract within 100, like 65 − 18 = 47.

FAQ

How do I use this fact families worksheet?

⌄

Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts for 6 fact family triangles with sums like 61 and 98. A fact family uses the same 3 numbers to make 2 addition facts and 2 subtraction facts. The sum is at the top. The directions on the page read: Read the 3 numbers in each triangle. Then, use them to write 2 addition facts and 2 subtraction facts. An answer key is included.

Can I use this fact families worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade fact families, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a fact family in 2nd grade math?

⌄

A fact family is a set of four related equations using three numbers - for example, 4 + 7 = 11, 7 + 4 = 11, 11 − 7 = 4, and 11 − 4 = 7.

How do fact families help students learn subtraction?

⌄

By showing that subtraction undoes addition, fact families allow students to use known addition facts to solve subtraction problems - a key fluency strategy.

Do fact families apply to multiplication and division as well?

⌄

Yes - while 2nd grade focuses on addition/subtraction fact families, the same concept extends to multiplication/division families in 3rd grade, making it a durable conceptual framework.

What is a fact family in second grade math?

⌄

A fact family is a group of related addition and subtraction equations sharing the same three numbers (e.g., 7, 8, 15: 7+8=15, 8+7=15, 15-7=8, 15-8=7). Second graders use fact families to demonstrate understanding of the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction (CCSS 2.OA.B.2) and to derive unknown subtraction facts from known addition facts.

How do fact families help with second-grade math fluency?

⌄

Knowing that 8 + 7 = 15 immediately gives a student 15 - 8 = 7 and 15 - 7 = 8 without additional computation. This think-addition strategy for subtraction is one of the most efficient routes to subtraction fluency within 20 (CCSS 2.OA.B.2). Students who internalize fact families require far less finger-counting for subtraction problems.

How do second graders practice fact families?

⌄

Triangle fact family cards (one number in each corner; cover the top number to practice addition, cover a bottom number to practice subtraction) are a classic hands-on tool. Worksheets presenting a triangle with the three numbers and asking students to write all four equations are standard independent practice. Sorting addition and subtraction equations by fact family also builds the concept.
