Fact Family Houses, Multiplication and Division

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Fact Family Houses, Multiplication and Division" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.OA.B.6. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on division, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and multiplication and division fact families never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this multiplication and division fact families worksheet?

⌄

Have your child cover one corner of a fact triangle and say the fact that finds it. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write 2 multiplication and 2 division facts in each of 4 fact family houses, like the house for 8, 9 and 72. A fact family is the multiplication and division facts made from the same three numbers, like 5 × 7 = 35 and 35 ÷ 7 = 5. The directions on the page read: Read the three numbers in each roof. Then, write the four facts of the family in the house: two multiplication and two division facts. An answer key is included.

Can I use this multiplication and division fact families worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade division, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with multiplication and division fact families. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a fact family?

⌄

A fact family is the group of facts made from the same three numbers. For 3, 7 and 21 they are 3 times 7, 7 times 3, 21 divided by 3 and 21 divided by 7, so knowing one fact gives the other three.

How does a number bond show a fact family?

⌄

The top number is the product of the two numbers below it. In a bond of 40 with 5 and 8, the facts are 5 times 8, 8 times 5, 40 divided by 5 and 40 divided by 8.

How can fact families be used for quick daily review?

⌄

Write all four facts from one set of three numbers as a warm-up, or cover one corner of a fact triangle and say the fact that finds it. Each family reviews multiplication and division at the same time.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 10 sheets have an answer key.

What division concepts should third graders learn?

⌄

Third graders learn that division means splitting into equal groups or finding how many groups. Per CCSS 3.OA.A.2, they should interpret whole-number quotients and solve division word problems within 100. They should understand division as the inverse of multiplication.

How do you introduce division to third graders?

⌄

Start with sharing equally: give 12 items to 3 people, how many does each get? Use concrete objects, then pictures, then equations. Worksheets with visual division (circling equal groups) bridge the concrete-to-abstract gap effectively.

How do I know if my child is fluent with division facts?

⌄

Fluent means a fact comes quickly and correctly without counting. The two minute drills hold 30 or 36 facts, and Division Fact Fluency Check, 40 Facts lists each missed fact to practice. CCSS 3.OA.C.7 expects fluency within 100 by the end of 3rd grade.
