How Much Longer? Length Word Problems in Centimeters
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"How Much Longer? Length Word Problems in Centimeters" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.MD.B.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on measurement, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and measuring and comparing lengths never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: solve length word problems in centimeters by writing a subtraction or addition equation. Answer key included. Part of our measuring and comparing lengths measurement collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Print at 100 percent so the printed rulers match a real ruler and the key. Show your child how to line up the 0 mark with one end, not the end of the ruler. Have them measure a few real pencils or crayons at home and compare.
What students will practice
- Students will measure lengths to the nearest quarter inch and to the nearest centimeter.
- Students will compare two lengths and find the difference.
- Students will make and read line plots of measured lengths.

Estimating lengths (inches)

Units of length (inches, feet, yards, miles)

Metric units of length (centimeters, meters and kilometers)

Measuring lengths to the nearest quarter inch

Measuring lengths to the nearest millimeter

Convert between inches, feet, and yards

Convert between inches, feet, and yards (harder)

FAQ
How do I use this measuring and comparing lengths worksheet?
⌄
Print at 100 percent so the printed rulers match a real ruler and the key. Show your child how to line up the 0 mark with one end, not the end of the ruler. Have them measure a few real pencils or crayons at home and compare.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Solve length word problems in centimeters by writing a subtraction or addition equation. To compare two lengths, subtract the shorter length from the longer length. To find a longer length, add. The directions on the page read: Read the Example. Then, read each problem. Then, write an equation. Then, write the answer in centimeters. An answer key is included.
Can I use this measuring and comparing lengths worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade measurement, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with measuring and comparing lengths. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you measure to the nearest quarter inch?
⌄
Line up the end of the object with the 0 mark on the ruler, not the edge. Find the mark closest to the other end. Each inch is split into four quarters, so a pencil might measure 4¼, 4½ or 4¾ inches.
What is a line plot?
⌄
A line plot shows data with an X above a number line for each measurement. One sheet has students draw Xs for 12 pencil lengths, and another asks which worm length is most common and how far apart the longest and shortest are.
Do students need a ruler for these sheets?
⌄
Most measuring pages print a ruler under each object, so print at 100 percent, actual size, and the printed ruler matches a real one. The page where students draw lines of a given length needs a real inch ruler.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All eight measuring and comparing lengths sheets have an answer key.
What measurement concepts are covered in third grade?
⌄
Third graders measure and estimate lengths in standard units (CCSS 3.MD.B.4), use rulers to measure to the nearest quarter inch, and solve perimeter problems for polygons (3.MD.D.8). They also measure liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms, and liters (3.MD.A.2) and use multiplication and addition to solve measurement word problems.
How do you help third graders measure accurately with a ruler?
⌄
Teach students to align the zero mark (not the edge of the ruler) with one end of the object. Practice measuring to the nearest inch, then half inch, then quarter inch in sequence. Discuss estimation first: about how many inches is this pencil? Compare the estimate to the measurement. Worksheets with pictures of objects on rulers provide practice without requiring physical rulers.
What is the difference between perimeter and area in third grade?
⌄
Perimeter is the total distance around a shape (add all side lengths); area is the amount of surface inside a shape (CCSS 3.MD.C.5-7 introduces area, 3.MD.D.8 covers perimeter). Confusion between the two is common. A useful anchor: perimeter is the fence around a yard (you walk along the outside); area is the carpet inside the room (it covers the floor). Both concepts use multiplication in third grade.
