Hidden Letters in Silent Letter Words
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Hidden Letters in Silent Letter Words" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.2.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. FAQ
How do I use this hidden letters worksheet?
⌄
Read the Word List aloud together first. Have your child count the boxes in a row to find the word, then fill in the missing letters and say the word. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Fill in missing letters to spell 6 silent letter words like knowledge, wrestle and autumn, 4 times each. In a hidden letters puzzle, some letters of a word are missing. You write the missing letters to spell the whole word. The directions on the page read: Read the 6 words in the Word List. Each word is shown 4 times with different letters hidden. Write the missing letter in each empty box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this hidden letters worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with hidden letters. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How does a hidden letters puzzle help with spelling?
⌄
Each word is shown 4 times with a different set of letters missing, so your child has to think about every part of the word, not just the start. Writing the same word several times in a row helps the spelling stick.
Why are words like embarrass and necessary hard to spell?
⌄
They have double letters in places that are easy to miss, like the rr and ss in embarrass, or silent letters like the k in knowledge. Seeing each word with different letters hidden makes your child check every letter, not just the start.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 4 5th grade hidden letters sheets have an answer key that fills in every missing letter.
