Spelling List of Able and Ible Words
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Spelling List of Able and Ible Words" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.2.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and spelling list practice never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

⌄
Read the rule at the top of the page together, then have your child sort the list in their head by pattern before writing. Use the fold and cover column as a self test. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read, write and spell 15 able and ible words like valuable and flexible, then finish 2 sentences. A suffix is a word part added at the end. The suffixes able and ible both mean “can be,” as in readable and edible. The directions on the page read: Read and say each word. Then, write it. Then, fold on the dashed line, cover the words and spell each one. Then, finish each sentence with a list word. An answer key is included.
Can I use this spelling list practice worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling list practice. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
When is it ie and when is it ei?
⌄
Write i before e, as in field and chief, except after c, as in receive and ceiling, or when the sound is long a, as in eight, weigh and neighbor.
What are shr, thr and squ?
⌄
Letter groups that start many words: shr as in shrimp and shrug, thr as in throat and thrill, and squ, where q is followed by u, as in squeeze and squirrel.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 3 5th grade spelling list sheets have an answer key.
